The Maltese Government
To make life easy
Malta is a constitutional republic. For the last decades, the political environment has been dominated by two major parties. A party can be elected to government for a period of five years.
The President of the Republic is the official head of state, but he has few administrative powers. The real power lies in the hands of the prime minister of the day.
The political scene is a very stable one. With only two parties in parliament, the possibility of a coalition government is a remote one. The government, in such a case, always has the absolute majority of seats in parliament.
Additionally, with regard to the financial services sector, both parties have, for the past twenty years, always voted unanimously. A broad consensus on government policy from both sides of the political specktrum exsists making the financial sector a rather stable one.
