Malta has no natural resources other than some quarried stone which is used for domestic housing. The economy therefore is a very open one, with Malta having to import practically all its needs . Its traditional export has been tourism which saw its beginning in the 1960's and which has flourished ever since. This was followed by the manufacturing industry especially in the textile industry.
While tourism continued to go from strength to strength, the textile industry slowly began to collapse. The need was felt to diversify and for this reason the first financial incentives to foreign investors where seen in the 1980's. Thus was born the financial sector in Malta. This sector continued to evolve over time and moved away from being an offshore regime to an onshore financial centre.
